Mandy's Comment: "It is not enough to succeed -- others must fail."

25A. Dumb Luck
Story by Maxwell Atoms and Mike Diederich / Storyboarded by Mike Diederich

Billy doesn't toss a pinch of salt over his left shoulder after spilling the contents of a salt shaker, and his incredible run of bad luck from this neglect is further intensified when he breaks a store full of mirrors, walks under a ladder, crosses the path of a black cat and steps on a whole lot of cracks.

Most notable moment: Grade-schooler Mandy sits in a hammock reading Catcher in the Rye.

25B. No Body Loves Grim
Story by Craig Lewis and Celia Weiss / Storyboarded by Celia Weiss

Billy separates Grim's body from his head and then can't remember where he left the body, which is soon found and adopted by one of the town's wealthiest families. Grim finds the body, but it doesn't want to return to its old life. Imagine that!

Most notable moment: Mandy, the Coppertone model.

Episode 26
Original broadcast date: June 25, 2004
Mandy's Comment: "Is it weird in here, or is it just you?"

26A. Lil' Porkchop
Story by Brett Varon / Storyboarded by Brett Varon

When Billy goes out to buy a pet fish, he naturally picks the most sickly little runt of a fish he can find. Trying to be kind, Grim overdoses "Lil' Porkchop" on Easy-Gro and Billy ends up with a sickly huge mutant fish that eventually needs to be flushed down the toilet.

Most notable moment: Billy's dad thinks Billy has gone fishing with him, and can't figure out that he didn't even after returning home and finding Billy there and waiting for him.

26B. Skarred for Life
Story by Maxwell Atoms and C.H. Greenblatt / Storyboard by C.H. Greenblatt

Ex-General Skarr becomes Billy's new next-door neighbor.

Most notable moment: In one of many scenes in this episode which is reminiscent of various horror movies, Billy phones Skarr and taunts him about the ultimate power to be found in Grim's scythe.

Episode 27
Original broadcast date: July 2, 2004
Mandy's Comment: "Punishment is its own reward."

27A. House of Pain
Story by Maxwell Atoms and Mike Diederich / Storyboard by Mike Diederich

Someone claiming to be "Lord Pain, the Great and Powerful from the Plain of Eternal Suffering" comes to Endsville to serve Grim, whom he refers to as "The Master." But naturally, Mandy has her own ideas about just who is "the Master" around there.

Most notable moment: Mandy "borrows" Grim's leg to help her reach behind the couch to get to the remote.

27B. A Grim Prophecy
Written and Storyboarded by Maxwell Atoms

A little story showing how one of Grim's first attempts at Reaping back during the Stone Age results in a Cave Witch predicting a terrible future in which he will be "controlled by mere children for all of eternity." Notice that one of the names on Grim's list is "B. Rubble".

Most notable moment: The Cave Witch turns to the television audience and prophecies that there will be an eternity of commercials in our future.

27C. Mandy Bites Dog
Story by Gord Zajac and Spencer Laudiero / Storyboard by Spencer Laudiero

Mandy tames Grim's extremely large and disobedient dog, 3-headed Cerberus, guardian of the Underworld.Read a bit more about Cerberus here. Also, Cerberus is the creature on which J.K. Rowling based Fluffy, in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Most notable moment: Mandy slaps Cerberus on one of its noses with a rolled-up newspaper to force it to drop the skeleton after it has taken Grim apart and is chewing on the bones.

Episode 28
Original broadcast date: July 9, 2004
Mandy's Comment: "How about a little fire, scarecrow?" (Mandy makes a great Wicked Witch of the West, doesn't she?)

28A. Nursery Crimes
Written and Storyboarded by Brett Varon

Grim tells Billy and Mandy a fairy tale out of The Supernatural Storybook of the Underworld. Billy and Mandy are sucked into the book, and even though Grim warns them to stick to the story no matter what, somehow or other they end up wandering into and out of many other fairy tales, screwing the stories up completely.

Most notable moment: We get to see Mandy with bedhead!

28B. My Peeps
Written by Matt Sullivan and Celia Wyss / Storyboard by Celia Wyss

When it turns out Billy needs glasses, Grim performs magic surgery which restores Billy's once-perfect eyesight but also causes him to be able to see the future.

Most notable moment: Billy tries to suction his eyes out of his head using a plunger.

Episode 29
Original broadcast date: July 16, 2004
Mandy's Comment: "Imperio!" (oops, Mandy just put the Imperius Curse on you. You are now at her beck and call.)

29A. Nigel Planter and the Chamber Pot of Secrets
Written by Maxwell Atoms and Mike Diederich / Storyboard by Mike Diederich
From the opening shot (Serious Whacks Golf Course) the Harry Potter jokes come almost too fast to follow in this sequel to "Toadblatt's School of Sorcery," as Nigel Planter now begs Grim, Mandy and Billy to help protect him from "the most dangerous dark wizard in the universe, Lord Moldybutt." The very sound of Moldybutt's name inconveniently causes things to break...even when spoken by Moldybutt himself. The running gag in the episode is that Billy simply cannot stop himself from saying the name.

Most notable moment: What looked like a Harry Potter spoof suddenly turned into a Scooby Doo spoof. I was laughing so hard when Toadblatt said "you meddlesome kids and your stupid dog" that I thought I would split in two.

29B. Circus of Fear
Written by Gord Zajac and Rich Chidlaw / Storyboard by Rich Chidlaw

Grim takes Billy and Mandy to The Greatest Show Under World, where the evil ringmaster realizes if he can kidnap the human freaks, he will be able to use them to lure customers into his failing circus.

Look carefully the circus part -- it's actually a spoof of the "scary" circus scene in We're Back: A Dinosaur's Story

Most notable moment: When the evil ringmaster introduces a stuffed cloth puppet (singing a spoof of "I Got No Strings" from Pinocchio) as a supposedly scary human being, Mandy asks "Who does he think he's kidding?" just about the time Billy starts to shriek "Aaaaaaaaah....a human!" in great fear. (Be sure to notice, this episode also turns into a spoof of Scooby Doo as Mandy unmasks Chlortho as actually being Doctor Fear and then in rapid succession as Billy's mom, as Eris, and finally as an earthworm. Yes, Dr. Fear was an earthworm all along and you'd been paying attention, it would have been obvious!)

Many thanks to Cassie for her help with this episode synopsis.

Episode 30
Original broadcast date: July 23, 2004
Mandy's Comment: "The call is coming from inside the house." (And Mandy is probably the one making it.)
This quote comes from "When A Stranger Calls," made in 1979; and I -think- "Scream" also used it in 1996. I doubt if anyone will be surprised to find that Mandy is a fan of old horror movies!

30A. Bully Boogie
Written by Spencer Laudiero, James Silverman and Zena Wyss / Storyboard by Spencer Laudiero
Mistakenly thinking that Grim will care, Grim's old enemy from Middle School days Boogie the Bogeyman, kidnaps Billy. A lot of the humor of the episode comes from Grim trying to extract some kind of revenge on Boogie for pranks long past, while constantly forgetting that he is actually supposed to be trying to get Billy back.

Most notable moment: Grim intones, "Who dares to disturb the Grim Reaper?" while wearing fuzzy pink bunny slippers.

30B. Here Thar Be Dwarves
Written by Gord Zajac and C.H. Greenblatt / Storyboard by C.H. Greenblatt

Billy goes on a picnic and somehow lands himself in the middle of a war between some dwarves and the Keebler elves.

This episode spoofs just about everything you can think of, including (but not limited to) the force field generator scene in "Star Wars: A New Hope"; the Council of Elrond scene in "Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring"; every Keebler elf commercial every made and even R. Lee Ermey's "Mail Call" show.

Most notable moment: As Grim wonders aloud how Billy is doing on his picnic, Billy shoots by overhead yelling "Hey, Grim! Hey, Mandy!" and Grim says, "That answers one question but opens up so many more." Mandy turns the garden hose on him.

Episode 31
Original broadcast date: July 30, 2004
Mandy's Comment: "We all go a little mad sometimes."
(This is a reprisal of Mandy's Comment in Episode 7, Original broadcast date July 19, 2002 -- Grim Vs. Mom, Bring Me the Head of Hector Con Carne, and Tastes Like Chicken -- but with some special effects not present the first time.)

31A. Which Came First?
Written by Matt Sullivan and Vincent Waller / Storyboard by Vincent Waller
When their school bus breaks down in the desert, Billy, Mandy and Grim stumble upon an underground laboratory improbably filled with giant man-eating chickens.

Most notable moment: Mandy puts a huge tarantula on Mindy, who screams and rolls around on the ground (and screams and rolls and screams and rolls and screams and rolls), while Mandy says "I'm bored," and wanders away.

31B. Substitute Teacher
Written by Maxwell Atoms and Chris Reccardi / Storyboard by Chris Reccardi

Sperg makes Nergal Jr.'s first day a school a misery until Junior uses his form-shifting abilities to get major revenge.

Most notable moment: Billy smuggles Grim into school in his backback, which is so stuffed that the security guard gets suspicious and opens it. After pulling out a bone and Grim's skull, the guard declares, "Nothing metal in there, move on."

Episode 32
Original broadcast date: October 1, 2004
Mandy's Comment: Mandy walks out onto the screen and screams, pointing her finger at the audience.

32A. Super Zero
Written and Storyboarded by Brett Varon

Billy demands to be turned into Captain Spring-Green Squeaker, a spring-green superhero who squeaks when he moves and squirts Heifer Farms Brand Fruit-on-the-Bottom All-Natural-Style Yogurt (partially hydrogenated) out of his armpits so that he can go fight the Evil Empire. Grim happily agrees to do it when he realizes that the nearest Evil Empire is in another galaxy billions of light years away and he might not see Billy again for months (if ever). But once Billy's dad starts treating Grim like a son in Billy's absence, Grim wishes that Billy would return. The running joke in the episode is that when Billy gets to a planet in the other galaxy he thinks it's deserted, even though a small, adorable creature keeps trying and failing to get his attention.

Most notable moment: While picking his nose, Billy's dad sticks his fingers so far back into head that he pulls out his brains -- and then eats them.

32B. Sickly Sweet
Written by Maxwell Atoms / Storyboard by Celia Weiss

Billy finds the Mask of the Beast in Grim's pocket and Grim tells him whoever puts it on must be nice, polite, friendly and happy or they will be turned into a terrible, hideous beast. Billy likes the idea of turning into a terrible, hideous beast a whole lot. As it turns out, the mask won't work on him because he is already happy and nice all the time...but it will definitely work on Mandy.

Most notable moment: Mandy struggles to say please and can hardly make herself do it even though she knows the mask will come off on its own if she can only be courteous, kind and friendly.

Episode 33
Original broadcast date: October 8, 2004
Mandy's Comment: "Dying is easy; comedy is hard."

33A. Bearded Billy
Written and Storyboarded by Brett Varon

Billy buys hair tonic so he can grow a beard. When it becomes obvious that the tonic isn't working, Grim offers to "spice it up a bit" and Billy ends up covered with hair from head to foot. Mistaken for Sasquatch, he ends up with a $50,000 bounty on his head, which Mandy and Hoss Delgado are each determined to collect.

Most notable moment: Mandy points out to Delgado that Billy is not as far up the evolutionary chain as a sasquatch.

33B. The Nerve
Written by Gord Zajac and Jim Schumann / Storyboard by Jim Schumann

Billy thinks stealing Mandy's raw nerve will help him stand up to Sperg, and Grim helps him take it, hoping if Mandy loses her nerve he will no longer have to take orders from her.

Most notable moment: Grim suddenly realizes that a stupid Billy with a lot of nerve is much worse than simply dealing with Mandy.

Episode 34
Original broadcast date: October 16, 2004
Mandy's Comment: "No matter how bad it seems, it could get worse."

34A. Attack of the Clowns
Written by Gord Zajac and C.H. Greenblatt / Storyboard by C.H. Greenblatt
The drastic action taken by Mandy and Grim to help Billy get over his fear of clowns backfires horribly.

Most notable moment: You won't hear this if you only watched the show on Friday night, but over the end credits, you can hear Billy saying "Destroy us all...destroy us all...destroy us all..."

34B. (Billy Gets Dumber) Complete and Utter Chaos (I have also seen the title spelled Complete and Udder Chaos, which would make just as much sense)
Written and Storyboarded by Spencer Laudiero

Eris claims she wants to give up Chaos and hands the Golden Apple to Grim for safekeeping. Even though he locks it away in his trunk, Mandy and Billy get their hands on it anyway -- which is exactly what Eris intended in the first place.

A couple of nods to Lord of the Rings: Eris hands the Golden Apple to Grim and tells him "Keep it secret; keep it safe"; Mandy takes the Golden Apple and does Galadriel's "dark queen" speech.

Most notable moment: In the opening credits to this episode, first the words "Billy Gets Dumber" appear on the screen. These words are then eaten by Eris's Golden Apple and the words "Complete and Utter Chaos" appear out of the Apple's "mouth". While this is going on, Eris sings a strange tune over the titles.

Episode 35
Original broadcast date: October 22, 2004
Mandy's Comment: "Get me a cheeseburger with no onions, a small order of fries, and a soda."

35A. A Test of Time
Written by Gord Zajac and Paul McEvoy / Storyboard by Paul McEvoy

Billy procrastinates so long that he runs out of time to get his history report done. Grim produces a Universal Remote Control for the Space-Time Continuum with the intention of turning back time far enough for Billy to have a chance to complete the report, but Billy snatches the remote out of Grim's hand and starts playing with time himself. When he shows the remote to Mandy they start bickering over who should have it, and history is changed forever.

Most notable moment: Billy and Mandy visit the future, only to find an aged Billy -just- completing his history report 42 years later. Young Billy throws the report in the toilet and both Billys laugh uproariously.

35B. A Kick in the Asgard
Written by Maxwell Atoms / Storyboard by Vincent Waller

A charge of static electricity screws up Grim's scythe and sends Billy to Asgard, the Norse afterworld. At the same time, a Norse warrior is sent to take Billy's place in this world...and NOBODY NOTICES.

Most notable moment: If you only watched this episode on Friday night you won't have heard this, but over the credits is a voice telling how Billy ate and drank and fought and eventually became King. The ongoing graphic is a shot of Billy sitting on the throne in Asgard, scratching himself and picking his nose. The narration is a parody of the ending credits speech from the movie "Conan the Barbarian" They even used the same voice actor, Mako, who played the goofy sorceror in the movie. Thanks to Floyd for pointing this out to me. Also, thanks, Christopher.

Notes:
1) Asgard is the heavenly dwelling of the Norse gods (like Odin, Thor and Loki, mentioned in tonight's episode) and slain war heroes. Norse mythology says that in Asgard you will feast and fight for all eternity (among other activities).
2) Mako not only did the narration for and acted in "Conan the Barbarian" and "Conan the Destroyer," he was also the Main Title Narrator for "Dexter's Laboratory" AND, as many of you already know, is the voice of Aku in "Samurai Jack." So he has quite a history with the Cartoon Network.

Episode 36
Original broadcast date: October 29, 2004
Mandy's Comment: "When you change the channel, we start talking about you behind your back."

36A. Whatever Happened to Billy Whatsisname?
Written by Maxwell Atoms and Alex Almaguer / Storyboard by Alex Almaguer
Mandy decides to trade Billy in on a new model, but the Replacement Billy doesn't just want to be Mandy's friend, he actually wants Billy's family, possessions and his life. An excellent take-off of a common suspense/horror-movie plot.

Most notable moment: Billy asks Grim where the New Billy came from, and Grim replies that he and Mandy found the replacement friend while researching farts on the internet...this is surely a classic Grim moment.
Note that the car given to Mandy by the New Billy is an Ends de Ville.

36B. Just the Two of Pus
Written by Jackie Buscarino and Brian Larsen / Storyboard by Brian Larsen

After a flatulent "skin care psychic" tells Sperg he must obtain the bones of the Grim Reaper to clear his skin of killer zits, Sperg forces himself to be nice to Billy and Grim in order to get close enough to steal some of Grim's bones.
Note that Wanda the psychic has a brain in a jar on her bookshelf that looks just like Evil Con Carne.

Most notable moment: Sperg's doctor takes x-rays of Sperg in order to hide Sperg's face rather than for diagnostic purposes.

If you only watched this episode on Friday night you won't have heard this because they talk over the credits. But there is a short story going on. Billy is calling out, "Hissy? Where are you, Hissy?" He asks Miss Butterbean if she's seen Hissy, the creepy-looking class pet insect. Miss Butterbean reminds him that Hissy is dead and that Billy was present when it happened. Suddenly Billy remembers Mandy offering him a nickel to eat Hissy, so he did. Then he pulls the nickel out of his pocket and the Jefferson head on the nickel says, "Poor Hissy." I sure wish the Friday night show wouldn't talk over these things!
