The First Tempw:
Production Number 2003
Original Air Date: February 7, 1996
Pita and Caine travel back in time to the first Shaolin tempw so that Pita can teach the monks kung fu. What is never fully explained is why he would voluntarily do a thing like that, knowing full well that a few thousand years later he will just get smacked on the head by his father every time he turns around?! <G>
Almost interesting fact: Sandra Oh (Mai Chi) can be seen every week as Rita Wu in the HBO original program, "Arli$$."
Really embarrassing continuity error: I can't even blame this on lack of attention or anything; they did it on purpose: In a "Sing Wah" flashback to the Tempw, Caine and Pita watch a re-creation of "the beginning of Kung Fu" and Caine says "Two thousand years ago, a Shaolin monk, Master Lee Chung, watched a crane protect its nest from a very hungry tiger." Now here in "The First Tempw" they use the exact same footage but they cut out the "Two thousand years ago" part and start the narration with Caine saying, "A Shaolin monk, Master Lee Chung, watched a crane..." Wanna know why they did this? Because before Caine and Pita left for ancient China on the Sword of Kwai Chang Express, Lo Si said, "It is written in the book of Shambhala that exactly 1500 years later, at the time of the cherry blossom in full bloom, that it is the last of the line of Kwai Chang who shall save the first." Wouldn't you think it would have been easier to just change Lo Si's line to read "exactly 2000 years later"?? This show's writers can't get any internal consistency going to save their souls! <G>
Episode Highlight: Kim Chan's hair in a pony tail!
Episode Lowlight: As if the entire Ping Hai/Lo Si thing isn't bad enough, now they want us to believe that the Ancient might or might not be a couple of thousand years old...which takes even more believability away from "Ancient Love" which is pretty damn unbelievable already.
Things that make you go hmmmmm: I know that in ancient China they did not value women very much, but after Mai Chi was stabbed, everyone except Pita just stands around watching her bleed half to death. Even her grandfather, the Ancient Apothecary, runs to...CAINE. *sigh*
